You've probably already noticed something. A kid who used to talk your ear off at dinner and now answers everything in one word. Grades that were fine last year and aren't this year. A friend group that changed overnight, or disappeared. Maybe it's harder to name than that: just a feeling that something's off.

Reaching out can be the hardest part. Most parents who end up looking into counselling have already spent weeks or months watching something shift and wondering whether it's a normal part of being a teenager or something that needs more support. There isn't always a clean way to tell the difference, and you don't have to figure it out alone.

Mood swings or irritability that have stuck around longer than a rough patch usually lasts. Withdrawal from things your teen used to care about, whether that's a sport, a friend group, or just talking to you. Grades that have dropped for a kid who previously cared about school. Anxiety around school or social situations that's started limiting what they're willing to do. Self-talk that sounds harsher than it should, comments about not being good enough or not mattering. Conflict at home that's gone past the usual friction. A major change your teen hasn't really talked through, a move, a divorce, a loss.

Any sign of self-harm, disordered eating, or substance use is worth acting on right away rather than waiting to see if it passes.

None of these on their own means something's seriously wrong. Taken together, or if any of them have lasted more than a few weeks, it's usually worth a conversation with someone trained to help.

Why teens may open up more to someone who isn't a parent

This part surprises some parents, and it's not a reflection on your relationship with your teen. Adolescence is partly about a kid figuring out who they are separate from their family, and a counsellor gives them a space to work through hard things without worrying about how it'll land at home or whether it'll change how you see them.

Counselling for teens is one-on-one, confidential, and built around that need for a space that's genuinely theirs. Sessions run in person out of our Victoria and Cowichan Valley offices, or online for teens anywhere in BC.

Confidentiality has the same limits it would for an adult client: a counsellor is legally required to act if there's a risk of serious harm to your teen or someone else, or in cases of abuse. Outside of that, what gets said in session stays there. Counsellors walk through what confidentiality does and doesn't cover with both you and your teen before sessions start, so nobody's caught off guard later.

What the first few sessions actually look like

A first session with a teen rarely dives straight into the hard stuff, and that's intentional. Most counsellors spend the first session or two building trust and getting a sense of who your teen is before getting into specifics. Teens tend to be more guarded early on than parents expect, which is normal and part of why this stage isn't rushed.

From there, sessions usually happen weekly or every other week. Counsellors lean on approaches suited to adolescents, things like CBT and DBT skills for managing anxiety and big emotions, adjusted to what your teen is actually dealing with rather than run as a fixed program everyone gets the same version of.

Getting Started

You don't need a diagnosis, a clear explanation, or even full certainty that something's wrong before reaching out. A free 20-minute consultation is a low-pressure way to talk through what you're seeing, ask questions, and find out whether individual counselling, family sessions, or a mix of both makes sense for your teen.

Full details on our approach, rates, and what to expect are on our Youth Counselling page, including current session rates across our Master's-level interns, counsellors awaiting registration, and fully licensed therapists. We offer direct billing to most major extended health plans, and many plans cover dependents under a parent's policy.

Our youth counselling team works with teens ages 13 and up, in Victoria, the Cowichan Valley, and online anywhere in BC.
