My approach
My approach to therapy is grounded in warmth, curiosity, and deep respect for your lived experience. I strive to create a space where you feel safe enough to explore what’s most important to you, without judgment or pressure. Rather than focusing solely on symptoms, I work with you to understand the deeper emotional patterns and relational dynamics that may be shaping your current experiences.
I particularly enjoy working with LGBTQIA+ individuals and communities, and I’m committed to providing a space where all aspects of your identity are welcomed and honored. I recognize the impact that identity, culture, and early experiences can have on mental health, and I aim to support clients navigating questions around self-understanding, belonging, and connection. I work with a trauma informed lens, and often draw from different modalities such as psychodynamic theory, attachment theory, Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT), tailored to each client.
Therapy with me is a collaborative process. Together, we’ll work at a pace that feels right for you, uncover inner strengths, move through challenges, and even share moments of humor and lightness along the way.
My Story
Hi, I’m Nissa (pronounced like “kiss-a,” not “knees-a”). I’ve been living and working on the West Coast (primarily on the territory of the lək̓ʷəŋən peoples) since 2012, when I moved here for my undergraduate studies. I completed my master’s degree in counselling in 2024 and have been working in the mental health field since then.
I was raised in the mountains by progressive, back-to-the-land parents who believed in community, and staying connected to nature. I’ve always been drawn to creative expression, and one of my greatest passions outside of therapy is pottery. I find that working with clay allows me to slow down, be present, and explore emotion through a different kind of language.
I identify as queer and live with a chronic illness/disability, both of which inform how I move through the world and how I understand resilience, identity, and the complexities of being human. These lived experiences give me a personal connection to the challenges many of my clients face, and they play a central role in how I hold space for others.
When I’m not working, you can often find me in the ceramics studio, spending time in nature, and hanging out with my partner, and our dogs - Tickle and Thunder.
